Microsoft’s Bing and Video Search: Why It is More "Universal"

REDMOND, WA — Bing, the newly introduced search engine from Microsoft, assembles videos from sources beyond video sharing sites, an approach which we find more open and "universal." Most video search engines process information provided by sharing sites via a feed of videos, which include the video file and related metadata about the clip.  While Bing seems to do an effective job in indexing videos from YouTube, Yahoo!, DailyMotion, Metacafe, Google Video, MySpace, and others, it also grabs video on Web pages which are not necessarily video sites, just site with video.For example, one of the biggest video sources we have found on Bing is the Huffington Post, which isn’t a video site.  The big blog has effective search optimization, so clips seen on the site get considerable exposure.  USA Today videos also get high visibility on Bing.Earlier this summer, we sat down with Stefan Weitz, Director of Bing.  He explained how publishers can work effectively with site maps and customized MediaRSS feeds.  He also explains the site's "small motion preview thumbnails" Andy Plesser, Managing Editor.
