However, we had a LONG walk to the main part of town. The city is very GREY...not sure how else to describe it. Lots of communists concrete apartment blocks, beautiful (but old) gray buildings, tons of graffiti and big parks made up our trek into town. We had a tour at the Palace of the Parliament which was the baby of Ceausescu, the communist ruler in the 80’s. It is the second largest building in the world, following the Pentagon. We were told that the same amount of heat required for the building could heat the entire city of Bucharest. The structure has never been used quite like planned. Instead, people can have events, conferences and meetings in the magnificent rooms. For example, Nadia Comaneci (olympic perfect 10.0 champion from Romania) had her wedding reception in the biggest hall, there was a NATO meeting and a conference hosted by George Bush Sr. The building was not complete when he was executed in 1989 and the construction is STILL going on. It was really cool to know that all the materials for the building and decoration of the rooms were from Romania. Some examples are marble and granite columns from western Romania and drapes made in Sighisoara from handmade silk. We would definitely ...
