The Final Night of British Marine 500 kcs Morse Code WT 1997 - Part 1 of 5

This series of 5 videos shows the final 45 minutes of operation of British Coastal Radio Stations on the 500 kcs marine frequency using Morse Code. These videos are meant to be of interest to British ex GPO and BT radio officers who worked at the marine costal stations, and any other interested radio operators around the world. The soundtrack is all Morse Code. I must say that I do not own the copyright for this material. If I am violating any copyright law, please let me know and I will remove the videos immediately. These recordings were done on the last day of 500 kcs Morse Code operation in Britain. The date was December 31st 1997. The time was shortly before midnight. All of the audio was recorded at Lands End Radio. There is also some brief video and photographs from some of the other coastal stations. The opening scene on video 1 shows the left hand of Graham Mercer at Portpatrick Radio as he kicked off the final night of good bye messages as 90+ years of radio history came to an end. David Nancarrow was the operator shown on all the Lands End footage. For all marine Radio Officers, this was a very emotional night. It will be hard for many people to understand this, but those that do, will realize that this was a historic and sad moment. Technology has changed and we must move forward.
