Novel about young New Mexican headed to big screen

a popular novel about a young new mexico boy is being turned into a movie. and of course, it will be shot here in our state. jeremy jojola sat down with albuquerque author rudulfo anaya about the excitement surrounding the film, bless me ultima. from the mind of rudulfo anaya---who is considered the godfather of chicano literature--came the famous novel bless me, ultima. it was published nearly 40 years ago. a story about a young boy who learns lessons from a curandera---a healer--who comes to live with his strict northern new mexico family. now it’s being turned into a film. shooting in new mexico begins this fall. "i'm excited. i hope everyone in new mexico is excited also." from his westside home anaya tells us he is a consultant on the film and is working closely with director carl franklin...who directed the movie out-of-time with denzel washington, and several other films. "and of course the characters come to life on the screen... in the book, you have to make them up. what does ultima look like, what does antonio look like..and all of the sudden you'll be seeing them on the screen..then you'll have to decide...is that what i thought or not." anaya says the film will not follow the novel exactly, but says it should send the same message to people about life in new mexico.
