Steve Jobs takes the wraps off of iCloud at Apple’s Develope

Today at San Francisco’s Moscone Center, Steve Jobs took to the stage at Apple's World Wide Developer's Conference to unveil iCloud, the company's new cloud based backup service. Jobs gave some background on the new product, explaining that today's computer users often use several devices - often all with different content. iCloud aims to change that by storing all your content and wirelessly pushing it to all your devices without any setup. All of the existing MobileMe apps have been re-written from the ground up to work with iCloud. Contact, Calendars and Mail will all stay in sync seamlessly.The iCloud service will be free to use, and any content that you've purchased, whether it be music, apps, books will be instantly available to download. Photos, videos, documents, device settings and app data will also be synced as well.The most hotly anticipated feature of iCloud is how the service will work with iTunes. Any songs and albums purchased with iTunes will be available to download free of charge on all of your devices, and if you choose, they can also download in the background automatically.And in typical Steve Jobs fashion, Steve Jobs appeared to end the demonstration only to say, "One more thing."For $24.99 a year, Apple will offer iTunes Match, a service that will scan your existing iTunes library and make any songs available in the iTunes music store available on all your devices running iTunes. Any songs not available on iTunes can be uploaded to the service. Matched songs will also be upgraded to 256 kbps AAC files. The service is being made available to registered developers today in Beta form, and will be released to consumers in the fall to coincide with the release of iOS 5.
