Trails are everywhere, if you know where they are. People from all over come to Banos to rent horses or mountain bikes so that they can ride through the lush mountainous terrain here. After putting a lot of effort into the initial preparations for the Puppet Circus, Chris and I decided to have a break and join several of the new volunteers on a Sunday to walk a beautiful 8km trail called the Ruta del Cascadas (Route of the Waterfalls). One of the long term volunteers at La Bib, Karl, suggested the hike and did the honour of being our tour guide. We left Banos at 8 am and took a bus to our starting point, at the Agoyan dam on the Rio Pastaza. This river is one of the greatest tributaries of the Amazon River. It forms a deep gorge between mountains with lots of waterfalls falling from the rim of its canyon. The trail that we took is called the Contrabandista Trail and was used in the 1920s to smuggle rum. Ancient lava flows from the volcano Tungurahua and huge landslides have created unusual landforms along the way.
