We shared the bus with two girls from Texas and a couple from England. The four hour journey was easy until we came to the unpaved road about 30 kms from Monteverde and Santa Elena. We bounced and bumped up the hill for about an hour, but the rocky road was well worth it. We were lucky to see Howler monkeys in the trees on the way up the road. Once we arrived, we booked in to the Pension Santa Elena. The staff here are so helpful and the place is rustic but really charming. We got a room with a private bath for $20 per night. The hostel also looks after street dogs and cats which is so nice. The animals are really sweet. A small dog adopted me and curled up on my lap to sleep for about two hours on our first afternoon. The next day a cat adopted me and also made use of my lap for an hour. We spent our first afternoon wandering in the small town and eventually made our way to the Frog Pond. It is home to about 20 species of frogs that live in Costa Rica. We didn't expect to see too many as they are nocturnal, but we were lucky to see at least one or two of each species ranging from tiny tree frogs to large toads.
