It is however a major University town, popular with Argentine tourists, and popular with the western tourists for its famous wine and its location right on the edge of the cordillera of the Andes. This would have been desert had it not been for the ancient indian viaducts that are still used today for agriculture. Indeed, every street in Mendoza has a two feet wide open channels of constant running water which feed the Sycamoor trees which line every street creating a cool dappling shade for pedestrians. I arrived in Mendoza in the dark, and just managed to spot these channels before any catastrophe involving a backpacker and over 75 litres and 25 kilos of baggage. Again plazas abound, but in Mendoza´s case, they are also a place for people to try to get to quickly if an earthquake occurs. Mendoza seems to be a bit of a Queenstown of Argentina. Many outbound activities involving bits of string, canyons and mountains, trekking, climbing, skiing, rafting etc etc So my first afternoon I headed up to the foothills, about 1000m to do my first paraglide which was brilliant.
