Anchor in a boat: Bill Lunn checks the fishing forecast

If the weather is too cold, the fish stop biting. If the weather is too warm, fishermen miss out on an aggressive biting period following the first spawn. With the fishing opener nine days away, anglers say analyzing the forecast can stress an angler out. It was chilly Thursday morning on Lake Pepin near Lake City when CHANNEL 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS Anchor Bill Lunn went out with Pro-fisherman Terry Tuma in search of Walleye. For on Lake Pepin, fishing season’s year round. After an unusually warm April, plus a later opener scheduled for 2010, fish could be past their aggressive, post-spawn biting period. It is a time that anglers rely on, Tuma said. "As far as the opener, its going to be very, very good fishing. I don't think there's any question about that because of the spawn," Tuma said. Lake Pepin's water temperature leveled out at 60 degrees on Thursday. That is ten degrees warmer than the average, according to lake records. Tuma says this has affecting the fishing cycle. "[We might use] A little later season approach that we would normally employ maybe in June," Tuma said. This "later season" approach means they may use trolling crankbaits or even a summer favorite, the leech, Tuma said. "Maybe you ought to grab the net. It's a walleye," Tuma said soon after casting a leech baited hook into the water. "It's not a bad fish," Tuma added. "Leah Mclean is going to give me a hard time if I don't come back with a big fish. What do we have to do?" said Lunn "We're just going to keep doing what we're doing," Tuma reassured. "Lets hope...lets hope." After a day on the lake, Tuma says he thinks the fishing should only get better for the opener on May 15. "It's going to be good. I'm sure its going to be very good fishing this year," Tuma said.
