Battle of Yorktown/ Articles of Confederation/ Treaty of Paris

0 of 5 Stars
In the year 1781, one of the most remembered battles of the American Revolution was fought. Cornwallis, a strong leader of the British, led British soldiers to Yorktown, Virginia. George Washington, who later became our first president, was very strong leader. He heard word of the British traveling to Yorktown. Many countries supported the patriots in their fight for freedom including the French. Layfette, a French leader, heard of reinforcements coming into Yorktown’s harbor, right next to the British fort. Meanwhile, congress was busy writing the articles of confederation. On September 28 1781, Layfette and Washington attacked the British. Layfette attacked by sea blocking the harbor. This prevented Henry Clinton from bringing reinforcements to Cornwallis. Without these fresh soldiers, the British were tired and weak. George Washington defeated the British and Cornwallis surrendered. After this battle, The Treaty Of Paris was signed marking the end to the war. The patriots had finally won their freedom.
