These areas are adjacent to the Colosseum and were the center of life during the Roman era. The crumbling structures, while still holding on to some of their old glory, are a reminder that even great civilizations can fall. At the height of the Roman Empire, they controlled a land mass nearly as large as the United States. Rome suffered a long decline until the barbarian hordes finally brought an end to the Roman Empire around 450AD. I was able to take this picture looking out over the palace grounds on the Palatine Hill. I think it is pretty amazing!"
