Ayers Kaserne 2005

From 1956 to 1992, Ayers Kaserne was the largest single U.S. Army garrison in Europe. During that time,"The Rock" was home for the 1st Brigade of the 3rd Armored Division and its massive array of weaponry. This video, which begins with an aerial still-photo taken in 1985, contains movie scenes of the deserted kaserne shot by German engineer Rainer Knack in 1999 and 2005. Our thanks to 3rd Armored Cold War veterans Dave Smith and John Marshall for supplying the video cassettes. Both served in the 3rd Bn, 36 Inf at Ayers in the 1960’s. The movie includes a visit in 2005 to the long-deserted main command and barracks area. That is followed with scenes in 1999 of civilian German construction and environmental engineers and workers in preparation for the Kaserne's gradual future conversion to a truck depot, warehouse facility, and other commercial usages.
