The flight actually took us to the nearest city of El Vigia and we took a cab from there to Merida. Merida airport has been closed for a while because of a plane crash! It´sa city in the valley of the Andes and therefore really hard to land a plane apparently! Being the only gringos on the flight landing in the very non English speaking town of El Vigia made for interesting sign language session trying to get past the masked woman at the door of the airport attempting to assure her we have no symptoms of swine flu! By the time we had our bags a crowd of airport personnel had gathered around jabbering in Spanish finding out where we were from. Someone had rallied up the only biligual guy in the airport and he organised us a cab to Merida. Another interesting tid-bit of information was that the timezone is 30 minutes ahead of what it should be according to the rest of the world clocks. The president decided he would change the timezone as well as set the currency at a ridculous exchange rate to make life so easy for the tourists. Having done a bit of reading before hand we knew to come to Merida as its known as the adventure capital of Venezuela! What better way to ...
