If Our Priorities were Right... WE INTERRUPT THIS PROGRAM TO BRING YOU A SPECIAL BULLETIN: THIS JUST IN! The governor today declared a statewide emergency in response to the current severe, chronic shortage of poetry. His action came although some expert observers claim the crisis is artificial, created by major producers of poetry who are deliberately withholding readable product from the marketplace in an attempt to up prices for poesy and put a living into it. The governor, however, said that whatever the true cause, "the need of the populous for poetry is real," and accordingly this crisis of words and meaning will be dealt with immediately by strong action coordinated from his office in the state capital. His emergency declaration is expected to make the state eligible for special Federal Emergency Management and National Endowment for the Arts funds. In addition, the governor will soon appoint, he said, "a Blue Ribbon Commission on Metaphorical Utterance," charged to seek the sources and solutions for "this crisis of the spirit, this failure to satisfy the dire need of common citizens everywhere for the sustaining grace of poetry, the wonderful words of transcendence."
