Black Is Beautiful — People are ignorant to say the least and what’s worse is people decide to remain ignorant. I can’t change the world and I know that, but I thought if I conveyed how I feel I can open people’s eyes. My film Black Is Beautiful shows how I’ve been feeling about myself for a while. I’m insecure about being black, but I have never spoken out about it before, which is why people are so surprised by my video. I hate stereotypes about black people and I dislike the way we are viewed and I wanted to state it through a performance. I do films because I’m passionate about them. I grew up watching the Oscars and motion pictures soon took over my life. I wanted people to see my face and witness my emotions when I talked about my insecurities about my skin color. I shot it according to the script, which I wrote in under 10 minutes. It’s a lot of feelings that needed to come out. I pieced the scenes together and added in MLK Jr. because his speech is important and responsible for the progression of black society. I did this video in 3 days and it was a smooth process because these feelings were so real and so strong that I could express them easily. Black people feeling insecure about their skin color isn’t rare, but to hear about it is. So I like to believe that I’m a leader in bringing this issue to people’s attention. People are ignorant, but maybe my work can make a difference.
