Thinking beyond the 'usual questions': small towns

Ken Kaplan, Building Partnerships for Development - Water and Sanitation, tells Nick Dickinson, IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre, about the Small Towns Project with WaterAid in order to explore how small towns are different from larger urban areas and rural area. One 'Aha' moment was realising how far a small town was from a large urban centre and may be forced to innovate. The size of the towns varies based on the country and cannot be easily defined by populations size. Slums do not exist in the small towns as in capital cities. However, land prices have sky-rocketed by 500-600% in 5 years as people move in and find ways to claim land. Identified questions about small towns on issues of social capital, land tenure, land rights, and small industry forces the water and sanitation sector to think outside of itself.WaterCube, World Water Week in Stockholm, 8 September 2010
