This video is part of a series showing different stages of a major modification of the Hamburg subway network which took place between 2006 and 2010: the eastern branch of the U3 between Berliner Tor and Mümmelmannsberg became the eastern branch of the U2, while the former U2 branch between Berliner Tor and Wandsbek-Gartenstadt became a part of the U3. The branch exchange required the two lines also exchanged their tracks at Berliner Tor station. As the track and tunnel layout west of Berliner Tor station was fairly unflexible (every train would have to cross the other line’s tracks before calling at Berliner Tor), large parts of the tunnel had to be modified. In this video: old track layout of the U2 between Berliner Tor and Hauptbahnhof Nord. The track used is now ends at a buffer, U2 trains now use the track which joins from the left immediately before the train enters the deep bore tunnel.
