ソマリア沖の海賊対策のため、アフリカのジブチに造られた自衛隊初めての本格的な海外拠点で任務にあたるP3C機に同乗し、活動を取材しました。海上自衛隊のP3Cは、高性能センサー類が搭載された哨戒機で、ソマリア沖で船舶の襲撃などを繰り返す海賊の捜索や、情報収集の任務にあたる。この日、海賊の姿は確認されなかったが、アデン湾で北朝鮮の貨物船を発見した。乗務員は「北朝鮮の貨物船です。ここに『ウォンサン』と書いてある」と話した。P3Cは、上空からの監視活動で得た情報を自衛隊の護衛艦に伝達し、連携しながら任務を行う。P3C機長・大津功一2等海佐は「とっても大事な作戦だなと思っています。もちろん日本のためにもなるし、世界の海運業界の安全のためにきっと役立っていると信じています」と話した。この海域での海賊被害は減少する見通しもなく、自衛隊の活動は、長期化するとみられている。
