1957年10月4日、ソビエト連邦は全世界に衝撃を与えたバイコヌール宇宙基地からR-7ロケットによって打上げられたのは、世界初の人工衛星であった重量83.6kg、直径58cmのアルミニウム球から、一方向に4本のアンテナが付いているだけのとても簡素な外観のスプートニクは、地上へ0.3秒おきに衛星の温度情報の信号を発した世界初の人工衛星となった、スプートニクの開発に迫ったロシア宇宙機関РОСКОСМОСのドキュメンタリーですスプートニク(СПУТНИК)という言葉は、人工衛星を意味するロシア語で「スプートニク衛星」という表記や言い方は、「衛星衛星」となってしまいますまた、後に打上げられるスプートニク3号が、本来最初に打上げられる予定でしたスプートニク2号では犬のライカが乗り、初めて大気圏外に出た生物となりましたが打上げ数時間後に死亡、その後の大気圏再突入時に空力加熱で燃え尽きました
