Iraq War Painting

"Shield" was painted to bring a face to soldiers who had died in the first seven months of the Iraq war up to the date of Sept 10, 2003. I collected names of the dead and their photos from from the Atlanta Constitutional Journal and printed them. I chose the date for symbolic reasons. Out of respect, I slightly altered the appearances by interpreting the portraits with a variety of techniques. But I did not use a computer of photo print out as a guide. It was all done with paint. I riveted the portraits together creating a waffer-thin shield to reference the lightly armed equipment/Humvee’s that were penetrated by roadside explosives. Those Humvee's without additional armor may have resulted in many injuries and deaths. I also wanted to suggest the "false" premise that the Iraq war would thwart or shield us from future terrorism.
