2004 Masters - Phils finally wins!

One of the greatest days in Masters history, plain and simple is exactly right Jim Nantz! Mickelson sheds the "best never to win a major" label and years of close calls by sinking an 18-footer on 18 for the win in dramatic fashion! This remains to date my favorite Masters memory (of over 15 now) and I was so happy for Lefty, who overcame a 2-over front 9 and two eagles by Ernie Els to shoot 31 on the back. His run began fittingly at Amen Corner on the most famous par 3 in the world, the 12th, 'Golden Bell,' with a 20-footer and continued at 13 with another birdie and a near hole out from the fairway at 14 for eagle. On 16 Mickelson set the stage for the final hole with that memorable uphill 20-footer to tie Els with two to play. After crushing a 3-wood off the tee, Phil placed a well struck 8-iron from 162 up the slope on 18 to 18 feet behind the flag, where a Masters and career-defining moment awaited. After years of near misses in the majors, including two runner-ups at the US Open at the time (he now has a record 5), Phil got a break on 18 when playing partner Chris DiMarco’s bunker shot ended up right behind his coin, giving him a perfect, well-deserved read of the putt. The reaction of the patrons and roars that echo through the pines gives me chills every April and I always look forward to it! It is crazy to think that his grandfather may have helped his ball find the lip and fall in to finally get that major he had always wanted after supporting his grandson's ...
