Raw Aerials; Manatees Huddle For Warmth In Florida

RIVIERA BEACH, FL --WPTV It’s the place manatees gather every winter in South Florida, whenever it gets cold. And for the next few mornings expect to see lot of manatees warming themselves in the discharge water of FPL's Riviera power plant. Captain Julie and Chopper 5 videographer Johann Hoffend found about one hundred of Florida's special sea cows huddled very close together just outside t More..he plant, along the Intracoastal waterway. The power plant's cooling system uses about 470,000 gallons of water each day from nearby Lake Worth. After the water is used, it is returned to the Intracoastal, slightly warmed. And that's what the manatees like. With overnight temperatures expected to go below 40 degrees tonight in much of South Florida — and near freezing along the Treasure Coast -- manatees will look for the warmest places to survive. Boaters should be cautious in areas where the sea mammals typically gather. WESH-TV's Chopper 2 captured this footage in January during a cold day as manatees gathered in large numbers in Blue Springs park in Volusia County.
