Reigning champion Serena Williams moved into the semifinals, while five-time winner Venus Williams and US Open champion Kim Clijsters were a pair of quarterfinal upset victims Tuesday at The Championships, Wimbledon. The top-seeded/world No. 1 Serena handled ninth-seeded Chinese Li Na 7-5, 6-3 to reach her seventh career Wimbledon semifinal. Li lost to Serena in a semifinal at the Australian Open back in January. Serena is now 5-1 lifetime against the hard-hitting Chinese star. The 28-year-old Serena captured her third Wimbledon title last year by beating her older sister Venus in the fourth all-Williams final here. The 12-time major champion Serena is also the reigning Aussie Open titlist. Serena’s semifinal opponent will be a non-seed, either Estonian Kaia Kanepi or Czech lefthander Petra Kvitova. In the big upset on Day 8, unseeded Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria landed in the semis with a stunning 6-2, 6-3 upset of the second-seeded Venus at the All England Club. Pironkova, the 82nd-ranked player in the world, had never before advanced past the second round in a major tournament before her unprecedented run here at this particular fortnight. The 22-year-old was able to post four breaks of serve and a 12-to-6 winners-to-errors ratio, giving her the biggest victory of her career.
