I didn't have much of a plan for the day but bumped into the Ethnographic museum and Art gallery a stone's throw from my hotel. They, together had a commanding view over the rest of the city. The art gallery was a bit dull really and had this odd system where the lights would clank on when you entered a room. Trouble is you can't actually see where you're going so there was a lot of stumbling about as I was the only one there. There were some nice Art Nouveau from the time of Mr Attaturk and a lot of horrible, new, "meaningful" A level type stuff with spiritual eyes and pregnant women. After asking for directions to the old town and castle, which I knew was near, it was suggested by a friendly art curator that I get a cab for about 5L. The cab driver didn't have a clue where it was and kept turning the map around with a vacant quizical look on his place. After about 30 mins driving like a Turkish cab driver and asking several people and nearly running down others, we made it to the old town despite my prompting that he was going the wrong way. I refused to pay the 15L cab fare and offered him 5L and quickly disappeared before he could chase after me.
