　米海軍の原子力空母ジョージ・ワシントン（ＧＷ）が１２日午前１０時前、米海軍横須賀基地（神奈川県横須賀市）を出港した。米海軍によると、西太平洋のパトロールのため。航海中、５月３０日～６月９日まで硫黄島（東京都小笠原村）で行った艦載機の陸上模擬着艦訓練（ＦＣＬＰ）の次のステップである、空母着艦資格取得訓練（ＣＱ）も行う。　出港前に会見した艦長のデビッド・ラウスマン大佐は「どこに行くか行かないかは明らかにできないが、海上自衛隊をはじめ、いろいろな同盟国との訓練やコミュニケーションの機会を楽しみにしている」と述べた。　報道陣から、「今回のような巨大地震が東京、横浜で起きれば、空母が転覆して、港の施設が破壊されたりして、原子炉が冷却できなくなる場合があるのではないか。安全対策はあるか」と質問されると、ラウスマン大佐は「この船はあらゆる種類の衝撃に耐えるように設計されており、原子炉を含め、とても堅牢だ。地震が来てもトラブルなく対応できる」と答えた。
