Green Zone - Title sequence (final)

This is the credit/prologue sequence for the film 'Green Zone. It was designed for a self negotiated brief titled ‘Prepare the Audience’. I knew when constructing the brief that there was a huge task ahead of me if I wanted to create something special in the time that I had. In total for this credit/prologue sequence I captured 192 video clips taken from 5 hours of Iraq war footage, created 56 After Effects compositions, 4 alternative full drafts, 18 different Maya 3D animation scene drafts and spent 5 hours solely editing the music and sound effects. I chose the song 'Gasoline' by Audioslave for the sequence as it was one of the big hits in the month that the coalition invaded Iraq. Another part of my reasoning to use the song was that I thought the title of the song and the lyrics would provide some subtle subtext, aimed at the reasoning for the commencement of the war. The hardest part out of all the challenges I faced when creating this credit sequence was telling the story successfully and accurately within the 2 minute timeframe. This was a vital requirement for the title to be a successful sequence that builds up an extensive back-story that prepares the audience for the film they are about to see. The additional challenge was making sure it kept the observer enthralled for the whole 2 minutes, and not appear to be lingering. One of my biggest requirements when first undertaking the project was that the prologue sequence be effective in adding emotional weight to the film itself. I believe I was successful at achieving this by including footage that wasn’t just contained to the violence of war, but also the human loss and suffering. These graphic visuals were placed specifically to ask the audience at a later date, the question of whether the war was worth it?
