Cette émission retrace l’historique de l'utilisation de la bombe A : c'est durant la seconde guerre mondiale et au jour de la défaite du 7 décembre 1941, quand l'armée américaine essuie le désastre de Pearl Harbor, que le président américain ROOSEVELT donne carte blanche à ses physiciens pour la recherche nucléaire. La ville de Chicago, hors de portée des bombes ennemies, est choisie comme centre. Enrico FERMI y construit la première pile atomique, Glen Théodore SEABORG y fabrique un élément qui n'existe pas dans la nature : le plutonium, dont personne ne connait excatement le puissance. A travers cette émission, se pose le problème de la responsabilité de la science, du savant et du pouvoir.Les interviews des différents savants et les très nombreux plans d'archives, complétées d'images de synthése, d'animations illustrant les expériences scientifiques, permettent de suivre l'évolution et les conditions des recherches, ainsi que les événements historiques qui en découlèrent. Cette émission rappelle, à travers cette riche rétrospective d'archives, que de 1941 jusqu'à l'explosion de la première bombe atomique à Hiroshima, les Etats Unis ont réuni des physiciens-savants pour la plupart immigrés, qui favorisent la recherche sur le plan nucléaire. L'enjeu est de découvrir l'utilisation militaire de cette énergie avant les allemands. Juste après les travaux sur la pile nucléaire de Enrico FERMI (qui avait fui l'Italie mussolinienne), et la découverte par Glen Théodore SEABORG du procédé de bombardement de l'uranium 238, s'ouvre le centre de recherches ultra secret de Los Alamos au nouveau Mexique, qui devient le repaire de plusieurs prix Nobel et éminents physiciens. Leur recherche est axée sur la fabrication de la bombe A.Ces recherches sont regroupées en un projet surnommé " Manhattan-Project", dirigé par le général GROVES et regroupant, entre autres Robert OPPENHEIMER, Edward LORENZ, Otto FRISCH, Glen Théodore SEABORG.
