Ce reportage consacré au service militaire alterne les interviews et les scènes de la vie d’un jeune conscrit (Pierre Pussier) pendant les premiers jours de son incorporation au 4ème chasseur cantonné à Lavalbonne dans l'Isère : adieux à son épouse devant l'entrée du régiment,séance de rasage par le coiffeur de la caserne, entretien avec son supérieur, visite médicale d'incorporation, essayage de l'uniforme, repas à la cantine, apprentissage des rudiments du métier des armes (le garde à vous et le repos) . Le jeune homme se confie à la fin de sa première journée :il est peintre platrier et papa d'une petite fille, il se souvient de la fête à l'occasion de son conseil de révision. Un autre conscrit s'étonne que la discipline soit assez relax et trouve les officiers sympathiques.Un capitaine du 4ème régiment de chasseurs évoque le rôle formateur des officiers instructeurs et de l'armée en général : apprendre à faire la guerre , favoriser la promotion sociale des jeunes en les aidant à se perfectionner dans leur métier et leur instruction. Selon lui, la discipline fait la force principale des armées.Abordant la question de l'obéissance aveugle et celle de la torture, il reconnait que tout être humain a des limites imposées par sa conscience.Michel, un jeune conscrit, juge que la discipline est nécessaire dans l'état actuel des choses . Il ne pense pas que l'armée lui ait appris grand chose sur les société et les classes sociales. Le reportage s'achève sur des scènes de chambrées et d'un peloton défilant en chantant.
