2010 - a high plains odyssey - cal trip 2010 3

Tale of the three gents: After I left Clark, Missouri, 600 miles ago this morning 6/18, I remembered how funny my conversation was last night. Brains broiling after a long 600 mile trip, I parked my over packed, wobbling but very shiny HAAAWWWG and walked into a MacDonaldo’s for a cheeseburger or two plus fries. I was beat and bushed. So, the nice mid-western girl who took my order asks me ever so politely "what is you name?" so she can call it when the order is done. The word "what" combines with my general weariness and I am immediately shifted into my "what?" mode and ask her back "what?" She asks again. "Paul" says I in a mumble as my brains are just beginning to drop in temp out of the critical zone. "What?" says she. "Paul" says I in a louder, clearer voice. "Rory" repeats she in her most polite tone. "Paul" corrects a pretty onlooker. I almost ask this third party "what?" but restrain myself and say "thanks" instead. I walk around to a table nearer the window to await my repast for the evening, gazing out and taking a picture of the HARLEY through the window. An older gent (maybe 6 months to a year older than moi) asks "that your bike?" Now fully stuck in the "what?" mode, I ask "what?" "What?" he answers back; obviously he shares my affliction. "What?" asks a second gent sitting at a third table and about our age. Beginning the sequence again, the first gent asks, "that your bike?" "Yes" says I.
