You can make a call long distance, you can make a jump long distance, and now, you can play piano long distance. South Carolina students in the US are using new technology to obtain piano lessons that reach across state lines. Using innovative web software, Adair Piano recently linked two Yamaha Disklavier Mark IV pianos for a remote piano lesson between teacher, Dr. Stella Sick (piano@ecompetition.org) in St. Paul, Minnesota, and student, Claudio Olivera in Columbia, South Carolina. The event was videoed for a special report recently on WLTX-TV of Columbia, SC. www.wltx.com This concept of linking teacher with student over the internet is made possible with midi-equipped keyboard instruments, laptop computers, and two special software programs: Internet Midi and Skype. Skype is a video-conferencing program that uses webcams to transmit video from one computer to another, and can be downloaded at no cost. Two cameras in place in both cities provide a variety of views. The pianos are linked together using an affordable music software program called Internet MIDI, created by George Litterst, an accomplished music educator, software developer, and lecturer. The software senses the movement of the piano keys and pedals when one of the instruments is played and transmits the movements over the internet causing the second piano to play in an identical fashion.
