My name is Florence Nightingale. Some of you might better know me as the Lady with the Lamp. I was born on the 12 of May 1820 into a rich, upper-class, well-connected British family in Florence, Italy. When I was sixteen, God called me to be a nurse and help the poor. I announced my decision to nurse the sick to my shocked and furious parents in 1844. They became used to the idea of me nursing when I became known as the Lady with the Lamp during the Crimean War. That was the name the scared and injured soldiers gave me, since I did rounds while holding my lamp at night to comfort them. In 1860, I laid the foundation of professional nursing with the establishment of my nursing school at St. Thomas' Hospital in London. It was the first secular nursing school in the world. I grew to love a politician and poet, Richard Monkton, but rejected him, in fear that he would try to interfere with my nursing. I also grew fond of a man named Benjamin Jowett. However, those are the only men who courted me. I also became lifelong friends with Mr. and Mrs. Herbert who helped me with my nursing. I traveled to Egypt and Rome to help the people there who were sick. I am told I will always be famous as the Lady with the Lamp. Probably because this, The Times newpaper said, during the Crimean War, that I was "a 'ministering angel' without any exaggeration in these hospitals, and as her slender form glides silently along each corridor, each poor fellow’s face softens with gratitude at the sight ...
