8日未明、新潟・村上市で行われた祭りで、山車を運んでいた人の列に車が突っ込み、男性8人が死傷した。警察は、車を運転していた20歳の男を現行犯逮捕した。8日午前0時半ごろ、新潟・村上市で行われていた村上大祭で、「おしゃぎり」と呼ばれる山車を運んでいた人の列に、普通乗用車が突っ込んだ。この事故で、静岡県の吉川貞一さん(67)と新潟県の室橋宏昭さん(44)が死亡し、そのほか1人が意識不明の重体になり、5人が重軽傷を負った。警察は、車を運転していた新潟・村上市の会社員・磯部真平容疑者(20)を、自動車運転過失傷害の現行犯で逮捕した。関係者によると、磯部容疑者は「居眠りをしていた」と話しているという。
