Desert Springs Horse Rescue

A thirty-minute reality series that follows the lives of women who work to rehabilitate horses who have been used to smuggle drugs across the Southwest, and then are left to die. Lorilei Peters and her husband run their rescue operation from the Desert Springs Equestrian Center located in the sprawling mountains of Tucson, Arizona. This seventy-two acre ranch houses about seventy horses who have been rehabilitated. They are then placed for adoption and given a chance at a second life. On a daily basis, Lorilei and Kathy Pomeroy attend horse auctions where they battle with politically connected ranchers to save the horses from slaughter or transfer to companies in Mexico and Canada for pharmaceutical research. They also work in tandem with US Border Patrol, the Sheriff’s Office, and the state Department of Agriculture. Lorilei and her team of vets, ranch hands, and trainers scour the southwest desert for horses that have been left for dead by the Mexican drug smugglers. In a scant thirty days, the health of these horses is revitalized, which allows them to be adopted by a family. The women meet in the ranch war room and gather around the status board to field incoming calls from trusted border agents, vets, and Department of Livestock officers who use the women and the ranch as a sanctuary.
