13日から携帯電話の番号しか知らなかった相手にもメールが送れるようになった。13日から始まった携帯会社の枠を越えた新サービスは、メールのあて先に電話番号を入れて送信すると、相手に届くというもの。このショートメッセージサービスは今まで、同じ携帯電話会社同士でだけ行えたが、13日からは、携帯電話会社の枠を越えて接続されることになった。このショートメッセージサービスとは、電話番号をメールアドレスの代わりに使い、携帯電話同士でメールを送受信するもの。これまでは、同じ携帯電話会社同士でのやり取りが可能だったが、13日からはNTTドコモやau、ソフトバンクモバイルなど5社の携帯電話会社間で相互接続サービスが開始された。1通あたりの送信料は、およそ2円から3円で、受信は無料。文字数も全角70文字程度という制限がある。街の人は、「幼稚園、保育園のママたち同士の連絡は便利かもしれない」、「アドレスわからない人は結構いるので、番号でやりとりできれば、それはそれで楽かな」、「会社の上司とか、待ち合わせのやりとりとか、便利かもしれない」などと語った。このショートメール機能の向上について、武蔵野学院大学・国際コミュニケーション学部の木暮祐一准教授は「(災害時)eメールのアドレスがわからないけど、電話番号はわかっているというのは多かったようで、電話番号さえわかればメールが送れるというサービスは、震災を機に、ずいぶん利用の期待が高まったのではないか」と語った。新たな連絡手段として期待されるが、街からは「いやですね。電話だったらそのまま切っちゃえばいいけど、メールだと返信しなきゃいけないし」、「ちょっと怖いかな。変なメールとかが来そうで」という不安の声も聞かれた。電話番号だけで手軽にメールが送信できることで、いたずらメールや迷惑メールが増えることが懸念される。木暮准教授は「(ショートメッセージサービスには)必ず発信者側の電話番号もついてくるので、受信の拒否もできるだろうし、逆に悪用しづらいものになると思います」と語った。携帯各社は、ショートメッセージサービスについて、1日に送信できるメール数に上限を設けることや、個別の電話番号に着信拒否設定を設ける対策を実施するとしている。
