Family homes bearing the names closely resembling Capulet & Montague are still found there. The crypt of the Basilica di San Zeno was supposedly the sight of the clandestine marriage of the star crossed lovers. We spent a whole afternoon walking the streets of Verona and visiting historical sites. The first hour or so we were dodging rain showers, but then the sun came out and the sky was blue. Our first stop was the Arena. It was too perfect and appeared to be reconstructed. Rod Stewart is playing there next week (seriously!). But if you had not seen the wonderful example of an Arena that we saw in Arles and the partial one we saw yesterday in Aosta, you would have thought it was amazing. We left there rather quickly and walked across town to Castelvecchio on the river Adige, which is now an museum. The Roman castle, built in 1374-1376 on the sight of a former Roman stronghold started a thousand years earlier, is all business, with very little adornment or concessions to beauty or comfort implemented in it's construction. The most interesting part of the castle was the museum which contained statuary, paintings, frescoes rescued from the walls, weaponry, jewelry, and armour from the Middle Ages.
