Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat: Brentwood 2010 (part 8/10)

The final performance this year of... The Arts: Brentwood Broadway Under the Stars' 'Joseph' a technicolor marvel "Broadway Under the Stars' final show of the season, "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," is a fun, entertaining musical offering something for everyone. The fast-paced, lighthearted show opened Sept. 10 to much applause, no doubt because of its terrific leads, beautifully harmonious singing, colorful costumes and infectious humor. The show, a collaboration of the Brentwood Art Society and Kinsella Theater Group, continues this weekend and next at the Brentwood Playhouse at the Streets of Brentwood. "Joseph" was one of the first musicals Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice wrote together. Originally a 15-minute play for schoolchildren, it was expanded to 75 minutes in 1968 and went on to become a blockbuster. The pair later would create "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Evita" before establishing separate careers. Webber’s music for Joseph includes various styles such as country, disco, vaudeville, pop, reggae and rock, among others, while Rice's lyrics are often witty and entertaining. The 90-minute musical is sung through almost completely, retelling the story of Joseph from the Hebrew Bible's Book of Genesis. Joseph is one of 12 sons — the favorite of his father, Jacob -- but his brothers are jealous and sell him into slavery.
