It is the same eco-system, same mountains and same glorious scenery, but it is the little unappreciated brother of the two parks. Coming down from the north we spent the night just outside the park and headed into Waterton, stopping briefly in the bison paddock. While we have plenty of bison closer to home, it seemed rude to just pass them by and we were rewarded by some orange calves. Apparently they stay orange for a while until their livers get up to speed. The first impression one gets of Waterton Lakes township is that the deer are in control. They roam everywhere with no traffic sense and practically no fear of humans. Drivers never know when a deer is going to leap out from behind a car, just to test their reflexes. We took a shuttle out to Cameron Lake where a juvenile black bear was sitting in the grass in the middle of the parking lot. Probably not the best place for him to be, but it is always nice to see them. The sign told us to scan the meadows at the far end of the lake for grizzlies, but there were none to be seen.
