It was 30º as we left the ship but much hotter on the island — it looked a bit like a desert with hills. We were assigned a park ranger and a guide who we were to follow down a dirt track for a mile. We had a safety talk and were told that they could not guarantee a sighting as the dragons are wild and not in captivity, but it was reassuring after being told that one bite can kill and that a child had been taken and eaten the previous year that the guide had a stick to protect us with! About halfway around we came across four adult dragons in the shade. We were told they were fully grown adults about 40 years old had powerful legs, claws and jaws, could kill with one bite and charge at about 18 miles an hour. We were within 20 foot of all of them, but at least the guide still had his stick.... We took some photos; they only moved their heads to watch us, but kept their bodies very still as if ready to pounce (can a dragon pounce?) The guard stood by with his stick, but they never moved. And then we saw a much younger dragon emerging from the bush, it was just a baby about a year old. The guide said we were lucky to see it as they tended to stay away from the ...
