First Taste

Had my first nerve block today, and it’s a smashing success. I started desensitization right away and have already been able to lower the temperature, tolerate more smells, wash my face on the right side, brush with toothpaste, and, best of all, I CAN HAVE FOOD IN MY MOUTH! I don't swallow it of course, just chew and spit. So basically I get the nutrition from the TPN feeds which go through my arm vein into my heart, but the enjoyment from the taste of real food. So far I've had water, Lipton tea, chicken broth, lemon ice tea, cranberry juice, Jello, Gatorade, and GINGER ALE! Yes, an actual carbonated beverage in my mouth. Tomorrow I will try my first soft foods like pudding, yogurt, etc (again, not swallowing, just desensitizing my mouth to taste, texture, and temperature). My next goal is to tolerate the temperatures outside my room. I've already gotten down to 86 from 93 F, and outside my room is 80 F, so if I can get my tolerance back to that (which is the same temperature I was tolerating Christmas 2009), then I'll be able to leave my room WITHOUT the helmet and walk around the hospital. And I will make a beeline straight for the cafe...
