Down amongst the street stalls that line the river we sat with the smell of food cooking over charcoal and with a beerlao on the table in front of us watching the sun go down. As we enjoyed the respite the breeze brought from the heat, the town (it feels more like a town than a city to me) slowly came to life after the torpor of another baking hot afternoon. Men and women would head out into the river with boats and nets and fish the shallow waters. Kids would tramp across a bamboo bridge to a large flat island on the river to play football. Through all this we would sit, talk and listen to the cries and cheers of the football watching the sun set into the waters of the Mekong. Perfect. Less than perfect were the daytime highs. 42C in the shade says one thing to me: air-con. Sadly not to be for us, but I can recommend standing under a cold shower to obtain a similar effect."
