Vicksburg Battle Continues

* General Ulysses S. Grant devised a plan to surround the Confederate stronghold of Vicksburg, Mississippi. He sent William T. Sherman, armed with 30,000 troops to attack Chickasaw Bluffs, which was 3 miles north of Vicksburg.

*During this time, the Confederate side saw conflicting interests as Confederate President Jefferson Davis and Joseph Johnston disagreed as to whether to turn Vicksburg into a fort?in order to attack the oncoming Union onslaught?or to attack Union positions in order to deter their advancements.

* The Confederates raided Union shops and supply bases ? General Grant, realizing this was a severe blow to his army?s chances of advancement, decided to pull his troops back to Memphis. However, General Sherman was uninformed of this change in plan and proceeded towards enemy territory with no base for supplies and aid ? a sure recipe for disaster.
