La Guyane, département français mal perçu en raison de sa nature hostile et du bagne : d'aucuns utilisaient il y a encore quelques décennies "la guillotine sèche" pour parler de la Guyane. Ce temps est apparemment révolu, puisque grâce à l'établissement de la base spatiale à Kourou, le département connaît aujourd'hui son heure de gloire auprès de la Métropole et plus largement de l'Europe. Mais qu'en est-il de ses populations amérindiennes, bonies, créoles dispersées le long des fleuves, dans la forêt? La révolution est lente et inégale. Ainsi, la ville de Cayenne reste plus que jamais un fleuron de l'architecture coloniale, les petites communes littorales vivent de la terre et de l'artisanat, tandis que l'indéclassable et traditionnel Carnaval est devenu pour la Guyane une quasi-institution !
