Ancient Egyptian Music...

An improvisation on a 3500 year old ancient Egyptian scale! This piece, "The Temple of Amun", is a clip of track 7 of my album, "Ancient Times - Music of the Ancient World", availlable from Apple iTunes and cdbaby: www.cdbaby.com The minor pentatonic scale on which this improvisation on replica 3000 year ol lyre is based, was deciphered by the late Prof. Hans Hickmann of the Museum in Cairo. Although the ancient Egyptians did not have written musical noation as we know it today, they usd a system of musical notation, known to be in use since the 4th Dynasty of the Old Kingdom, whereby hand gestures denote the changes in pitch and the ornamentation of a melody. This system is called "chironomy", and it has survived to the present day in Egypt, where it is still sometimes used in the Coptic Church... Towards the end of the video, there is an illustration of an ancient Egyptian harpist, with the chironomis in front of him, representing the melody through chironomy gestures.
