Job seekers need to find holiday jobs now

new numbers released today, show new mexico’s unemployment problem is getting worse. people hoping to land a job during the upcoming holiday shopping season - need to start applying now. kayla anderson is here to explain in tonight's top story. the competition is tough this year — a lot of businesses have already filled their holiday positions. and that doesn't bode well for job seekers because experts say retail job stings online are down by 75 percent in the albuquerque area. new mexico's department of workforce solutions says the state's job growth is at a 65- year low. as jobseekers start looking for holiday work... randy richardson with jobing dot com says it's slim pickings this year. richardson's website averages about 11-hundred job postings a day. but this year -- retail jobs are down big time. if you've got your heart set on retail... target, walmart sears and borders are all hiring... and so is cost plus... but managers there say you need to hurry. cost plus also says there's plenty of opportunity for seasonal work to turn into a permanent job. job seekers may need to try something new-- like taking that holiday job with a major shipping company. fed-ex and ups are both hiring. also try to sites like jobing dot com. we have a link to that site at kob- dot com under four links. back to you. here's a look at the new unemployment numbers released today for the state. the department of workforce solutions says statewide unemplment increased from 7- point-4 percent in august to 7-point- 7-percent in september. albuquerque's bless rate reached 8 percent in september. in albuquerque -- september saw a loss of about 800 jobs in construction alone -- the largest drop since 1997. places like hotels and restaurants also slashed jobs as the tourist season started winding down.
