Shortly after there was a signpost to Roslin village. They had a brand new paved car park and we were the only ones there to start with. [We were informed later that if we had arrived on the weekend we could hardly have moved for the crowds ] No fee in the car park!...until we entered the chapel grounds. Well worth the visit and the small fee in spite of all the scaffolding and protective roof. Some years ago the chapel was not looking good but that was pre-Da Vinci times [For the uninitiated the Roslyn Chapel features strongly in the book by Dan Brown called The Da Vinci Code. ]. The inside had been covered in green moss from the damp. Before they could do serious repairs they had to dry the building out. They did this by constructing an umbrella like roof over the whole. It worked because the interior of the chapel is delightful...and dry. The strange stone carvings both inside and out are reminiscent of black magic or druid days but I am sure they are not. We spent some time inside and I did the roof walk. The scaffolding supported a walkway around the roofline of the chapel and it gave me a wonderful bird's eye view of the structure and all the fine detail up there. There was a ...
