Loyal Oprah fans here in New York marked the end of an era Wednesday as the Queen of Daytime took her final bow, 25 years after she first went on the air. NY1’s Tara Lynn Wagner staked out a viewing party in Midtown and filed the following report. Forget the frenzy over favorite things, the celebrity interviews and all those cars. In her final show Wednesday, the only gift Oprah gave her audience was gratitude. "This, my last show, is my thank you. It's a love letter to you," Oprah told viewers. Standing alone on a barebones set, the talk show host spoke directly to her audience and at viewing parties like one held at the Paley Center for Media in Manhattan. "I call her a mentor and an angel. I love Oprah. I do," said one viewer. Slate Associate Editor Jessica Grose says over the course of 25 years, Oprah Winfrey has transformed herself into something far bigger than a talk show host in the eyes of her fans. "She is a guru to a lot of people and I think they're really inspired by her story," Grose said. "Oprah is the epitome of living. She came from nothing and built this amazing life. And she's asking people to live their best life everyday," said one viewer. Calling the show her classroom, Winfrey listed the many lessons she's learned about love, energy, forgiveness and self worth. "It's like a sermon. It's like the highlights of all the things she believes," said one viewer. "It's been a great motivational speech. She's telling us what we need to hear to move forward ...
