News Update: Google Making Slight Change to Approach in China (NASDAQ:GOOG)

Google (GOOG) said it would make a small change to how Chinese users access its Internet search service after the Chinese government threatened to revoke the company’s license to provide online content in that country, the Wall Street Journal says. It's unclear whether the government will approve the change and renew Google's license. The company on Tuesday said it had submitted an application to approve the license as part of an annual renewal process. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said at a regular press briefing on Tuesday that he hadn't seen the new Google statement, according to the story. Qin repeated China's position that "the Chinese government encourages foreign enterprises to operate in China according to the law and we also administer the Internet according to the law." Google's move comes three months after the Internet search giant stopped obeying government censorship rules after complaining in January that it had been hit with a cyber attack that it said came from within China. China's own Internet filters now censor Google's searches. Google has been automatically redirecting users of Google.cn, which is based in mainland China, to a Hong Kong-based site, Google.com.hk, that doesn't censor search results, the WSJ says. But the Chinese government has told the company that approach was "unacceptable," according to a Monday post on the company's blog.
