Reviewer’s Note: Sprouting (growing your own sprouts) is a fun and healthy way to getting started on a raw food diet. The raw food coach Karen Knowler, shows us how get started on growing one’s own sprouts and the things that are needed for it. Eating raw sprouts is very healthy and gives us all the fiber, energy and proteins that we can’t ever get from cooked beans or seeds. The first thing that is needed is a sprouting jar, which is a simple jar with a mesh lid or one can improvise with an old jam jar and use muslin to cover the mouth with the help of rubber garters. The next is to choose a bean or seed to sprout. When starting on raw food one may consider keeping a reasonable stock of beans or seeds that one likes, to sprout from time to time. Karen chooses chickpeas (garbanzo) to demonstrate sprouting in this video. The jar with the mesh lid is then filled up to and inch from the base with the chickpeas. Pure water is added to the jar, to start the sprouting process and the lid is closed over it. It is always advised to pour more water (about 3 times more) than you think is necessary, because the seeds will take up all the water to sprout. The beans/seeds should be left to sprout overnight and the next morning the remaining water in the jar is to be drained off. It is likely in most cases that the used water will have some color to it. This is natural and is just the bean/seed releasing some of its chemicals that color the water. The jar with the seeds is then rinsed with water and drained properly so that no extra water remains in the jar, because any extra water could lead to rotting of the seeds. Pure or tap water could be used for rinsing the seeds because the seeds won’t be sitting in them. The jar with the seeds/beans is then left to sit. Twenty four hours from when it was filled with water to sprout, the seeds should be rinsed and drained (thoroughly) again. This leads to washing off, of the toxins released by the seed and at the sa...
