アフリカ54番目の新しい国、南スーダン共和国が9日、誕生した。新しい首都ジュバで行われた独立式典には、北部のバシル大統領も出席し、祝辞を述べた。独立式典では、南スーダンの大統領に就任したキール氏が、建国を正式に宣言した。南スーダン共和国のキール初代大統領は「わたしは南スーダン国民の品位と尊厳を守ります。神よ、力を与えたまえ」と述べた。式典には、世界各国からの代表団や国連の潘基文(パン・ギムン)事務総長らが出席し、長く対立関係にあった北部のバシル大統領も参列して、友好関係をアピールしていた。会場周辺には数万人の市民が集まり、新しい南スーダンの国旗を手に、歓喜の声を上げた。式典会場前の広場では、アフリカの伝統的な踊りが披露され、人々が独立の喜びを全身で表わしていた。イスラム教徒を中心とする北部と、キリスト教徒などを中心とする南部との間で続いた20年以上にわたる内戦を経て独立した南スーダンだが、中部の油田地帯の領有権をめぐる問題は未解決のままで、引き続き、北部との間で緊張状態が続くとみられている。
