IOC(国際オリンピック委員会)は6日、2018年冬のオリンピック開催地に、韓国の平昌(ピョンチャン)を選出した。韓国で冬のオリンピックが開かれるのは、初めてのこととなる。開催地に決まった平昌は、喜びに包まれている。平昌のスキージャンプ場では、数百人の地元住民らが、投票の様子を巨大スクリーンで見守り、決定の瞬間には、感極まって泣き出す人もいた。地元住民は「とてもうれしい。ここでオリンピックが開かれるとは感動!」と話した。農村地域だった平昌は、オリンピック誘致のため、韓国政府が積極的に開発を進め、2010年、2014年と立候補したものの、敗れていて、3度目の挑戦での悲願達成に、韓国全土が喜びに包まれている。
